The Wassail Song has a bit of history behind it. The Old English “Waes Hail” is a word that expresses hope for a good cider apple harvest… and so a wassail is a drink of hot mulled cider! Okay… maybe this isn’t completely consistent with many of the other Christmas carols we sing, but a mug of hot mulled cider certainly is nice to have on a snowy Christmas night!
Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green,
Here we come a-wand’ring so fair to be seen.
Love and joy come to you, and to you your wassail, too,
And God bless you, and send you a Happy New Year.
God bless the master of this house, likewise the mistress too;
And all the little children that round the table go.
