There are many stories about Greensleeves. Some historical references say that Henry VIII wrote it… but it had to be someone else because it was written after he’d died. However, it was “on the charts” by Shakespeare’s time, so it’s been around for quite a while, and often appears during Christmas in the form of “What Child is This?”
What Child is this, who, laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet while shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ, the King,
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing:
Haste, haste to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary!
Why lies He in such mean estate where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christian, fear: for sinners here the silent Word is pleading.
So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh / Come, peasant, king to own Him.
The King of kings salvation brings; let loving hearts enthrone Him.

That was an absolutely amazing arrangement! So beautiful! Thank you for a lovely way to start my day. Do you think a level 1 beginners choir (only 4-5 members so far) could master those 8th note runs?

Hi Donna!
Thank you for writing! “Greensleeves/What Child is This?” is one of our favorite eight-bell Christmas arrangements. However, we’re thinking that it might be a bit of a stretch for a beginning group, especially because of the runs.
Instead, we’d like to suggest that some of our “Surprisingly Easy”™ Christmas music might be a better first effort. The best deal is found in our collections of easier eight-bell music. Do take a look and let us know what you think!
