Another Mile

We have two basic problems: Not walking with the Lord, and trying to anticipate what He will do. Both of these mean that we’re guilty of not following God as He gives us truth and guidance. Another Mile takes a look at this problem, and recalls for us that all we need do is follow Jesus as far as He’s supplied light for the path. And guess what? When we arrive at the edge of the light he provided a moment ago, there’s more light with which to see the next step. The clue is in the words – Nathan is a cross-country runner, and so gets to give “another mile” with some reasonable frequency…
How shall I run the course ahead?
Shall I travel it in fits and starts?
Shall I dash ‘twixt cheap and trivial goals,
Failing to give the Lord my heart?
My life needs more than mere continuity,
Confused steps will cause me to roam,
But eternal life’s destination is perpetuity,
So I’ll take the strides that surely take me home.
Another mile to crucify the flesh,
Another mile to live His life by death
to myself so Jesus will shine through me
that I might honor Him as I live.
Another mile with the Lord on whom I lean,
Another mile to see things I’ve never seen
so that faith would be the only way I live,
Another mile for His sake is mine to give.
Shall I make long marches my plan?
Shall I aim past the things I see?
And so ignore God’s direction day to day,
Failing to follow where He leads?
My life needs more than mere continuity,
