One of Joe’s most notable characteristics is that he’s not just tall, but big. This was an essential part of his being a football player in senior high. However, it gave an impression quite different from the inner man – a child of God who desired to follow his Lord’s calling, and a sensitive person who at times found himself less than articulate in describing his feelings about his circumstances.
The text of I Run To God recalls Joe’s special qualities and personality. The first line, “When it seems that my life is not so great…” recalls his manner of saying things. The “run to God” part sort of recalls his involvement in football, and serves to draw a vivid picture of Joe setting the example for us: No matter how wise or strong we are, we always ought to be running to the Father where we can be safe and comforted.
Update, March 1998: I learned from Joe’s father that Joe is heading to school – on a voice scholarship! I’m singularly blessed in having had a small part in his musical development – praise God for the heritage we can share in ministry!
When it seems that my life is not so great,
when my heart begins to ache,
I run to God.
When it feels that the world will tread me down,
when I meet its stares and frowns,
I run to God.
And He holds me in His arms so strong and warm,
There I nestle absolutely safe from harm,
He’s my Heavenly Father who comforts me when I run to Him in tears.
And my fears all disappear in His embrace,
Made to vanish by the brightness of His face,
He’s my Heavenly Father who comforts me, He gives me security against my fears.
When it seems that my life is undefined,
When my simple eyes go blind,
I run to God.
When it feels that all power to hope is gone,
When I cannot see the dawn,
I run to God.
