Psalm 67:1

The thematic material for this song was taken from “Debbie,” which means “bee;” this constitutes a verbal clue. In addition to writing meaningful lyrics, I tried to maintain scientific accuracy in the words: Bees don’t fly at night, presumably because they depend on their ability to perceive ultraviolet light (which wouldn’t be available in sufficient amounts at night) to see what they’re doing. The parallel between flowers/sunshine and blessings/God really makes a lot of sense when we look at our own lives. In a sense, then, this song is a sort of parable.

There also is a clue in the music. Ignoring the flats in the key signature, the uppermost notes in the first four measures of the accompaniment spell D-E-B-B-E-E- – D-E-B-B-E-E-F. Musically, it was interesting to observe how the resulting melodic line led to quartal (fourth-based) harmonies.

As the bee seeks the flowers in the sunshine, so my heart desires the Lord,
To rejoice in the light of His presence, and to follow in His Word,
Like the bee, I’ll remember my Creator, and look up to God above,
For the flowers are the blessings that He gives, and the sunshine is His love.

So I will seek, seek, seek His face in the flowers along my way,
I will seek, seek, seek His face in the brightness of eternal day.
For His joy is the nectar I’m tasting, and His glory all the colors I’ll need,
So I’ll tell those who around me are waiting of the message God has given me and I’ll lead
them to seek, seek, seek His face through the flowers along my way,
I will seek, seek, seek His face in the brightness of eternal day.

Now the bee doesn’t fly out in the nighttime, or when the sky is clouded gray,
‘Cause it needs to see the colors of the flowers in the brightness of the day,
Like the bee, I’ll remember my Creator, I will trust in Him alone,
For I only comprehend the colors He brings in the radiance from His love.
