The need for God to work in us to overcome the influence of the world around us is a great concern of the Christian life. Without His leading and strength, we have no possibility of victory; with Him, we can have no possibility of defeat. Of course, this is somewhat more difficult than a simple decision, because the devil is always seeking to discourage and disable each of us; if he succeeds in this design, the church might be divided against itself, and at the very least will expend resources which could have been focused in some other ministry to the need for spiritual repair. So it is essential to corporate church life as well as individual testimony that we submit to the Lord and His leading.
At the time this song was written, Becky was planning to be an Egyptologist, so the clue is found in the references to Jacob and Goshen, the prime land in Egypt to which the Israelites migrated during the great famine in Genesis 41-47. Additionally, in the Old Testament, Egypt is a symbol of the world and the old nature (take a look at how the children of Israel longed for “the old days” of slavery in Egypt during the Exodus).
I want to overcome the world,
I want to overcome the world,
From the things that tempt my heart to stray,
Lord Jesus, rescue me and keep me on Your way,
I want to overcome the world.
Lord, I cry to You in frustration
When I miss the mark and sin,
And rely on myself and my foolish contemplations
Instead of the Spirit within.
As Jacob cried out from Goshen,
As the prison resounds with the plea,
“Take my will, take my heart, take my humble devotion,
Lord, take my all, and give victory.”
