Rachel joined us when she was in junior high, and quickly became very well enmeshed in our ministry. She sang as an alto and later as a tenor, and was well on the way to becoming a Student Director when she moved out of the area. Oh yes – she also was going through some preliminary military training with Mike too…
The primary clue, of course, is that the lyrics allude to the separation which we’re having to face. I’m thankful that it’s only momentary compared to eternity with the Lord, during which Rachel and I shall spend at least some time hangin’ out. There’s a second clue too… the word “ray” in the chorus is a homophone of Rachel’s nickname “Rae”.
Sometimes friends are not forever,
Sometimes life has painful days,
Circumstances shatter kindred hearts
Unprepared for the separation of their ways,
But there is hope beyond time and space
in the Lord on high,
He holds my hand while I walk this earth,
And gives me life when I die.
No matter who leaves me, no matter where I go,
You, my Jesus, will hold me close and be true,
No matter what happens, no matter how hard,
Though my path leads through storm and fire,
You’re my ray of hope
And I put my undying trust in You.
One day faith will be rewarded,
One day truth will reign supreme,
Those of us who trust in Jesus
will know out faith was more than just a dream.
So in that day we’ll be with the Lord,
with our faith made sight,
We’ll see the valleys of dark that we walked
as the path to glorious light.
As my life recedes from theirs,
and pain consumes my heart,
Keep my eyes on You, O Lord,
for You are the Friend who will never depart!
