Jesse was riding his bike at Angel Island in November 1989 when he missed a curve and went over the edge, breaking his neck (first and second cervical vertebrae). Such an injury is almost always fatal, and the doctors told Jesse he was fortunate to be alive, and that he could expect to be permanently paralyzed from the neck down. One day Jesse called for the nurse, who came to his room to ask what he needed. “I’d like some aspirin because my leg hurts.”
The Lord had other plans for Jesse, and after only five months of therapy he regained full use of his entire body. This sequence of events is commemorated in this song.
As a walking testimony for the glory of Jesus Christ, Jesse was able to join us for the first performance of his song. Traditionally, we have a member of Living Water read Isaiah 40:31, the key verse of the song, before we sing it (Jesse did this reading the first time), and we have the congregation join us on the last chorus. Note that the penultimate chorus is “the Lord will give you wings,” cuing the audience for what’s ahead.
When I’m in the race and I take a fall, and my running pulls up short,
And I don’t understand why I can’t get up or why my body hurts,
And though I cannot move my head, my hands, my arms, my feet,
Through the darkness comes God’s touch in answer to my need.
And the Lord will give me wings,
With Him I’ll run and never tire,
Through His Spirit’s touch He will inspire,
The Lord will give me wings
And I’ll walk with Him in a glorious land
In the joys that come from His right hand,
The Lord will give me wings.
When I think that things are going well and wrest control from God,
And forget that He’s the reason I’ve survived the path I’ve trod,
Then He changes circumstances to drive me to my knees
Till my pride is broken down and, looking up, I see…
If you find yourself exhausted and you need someone to trust,
If you’re looking for a rescuer to pull you from the dust,
My Lord is always ready in answer to your cry,
And He will set you free and lift you high!
