I am continually astonished by our general inability to perceive God as being omnipresent; perhaps it’s a demonstration of our sight- and feeling-oriented mindset, where we trust most in the things we can see, rather than exercising faith in God, who made them and controls them. It’s a great shame for Christians to lament the state of “being alone” when the Lord is right there waiting for them to turn to Him.
So this song is about the Companion who is always near by, and the God who desires for us to trust in Him. You are truly never alone if Jesus is your Lord!
There are multiple clues. The bridge contains the words “His rest and blessing are new each day…” (incidentally, Lamentations 3:23-24, among many, many other verses, are special to Geri). The two-part harmony points to her being Jesse’s single mom, and the triple meter (3/4) recalls that no matter what we may think our circumstances are, if we’re in Christ the everlasting Lord is always waiting for us to run to His arms and be close to Him.
