The Internet is a wonderful way to meet people, chat rooms or not. This is how I met Vickie. She was searching for men’s quartet music (she accompanies “The Crosswards” from the First United Methodist Church in Rawlins, Wyoming), and happened upon the Choraegus site.
Somewhere along the way through a few e-mail transmissions, we happened upon the Crosswards’ need for some wedding music – Dwight, their bass, had a daughter who was getting married and she wanted Dad’s quartet to sing at the wedding. Not having any TTBB wedding repertoire in hand or mind, I proposed writing something, and a couple of days later this song was the result.
It seems to capture the emotional turmoil of a father who’s watching his daughter at her wedding. I can see a flood of tears from the church in Rawlins descending on and endangering the Mississippi Valley… and I’m pretty sure I’d be incapable of making it all the way through the song with intact composure. (No, I never though I’d ever write a tear-jerker like this…).
Best wishes to you, Dwight and Sara (and Corey too)!
He held her on the day she was born;
She looked into his eyes,
He saw his daughter, precious and sweet;
She saw a man so wise,
And so he loved his newborn girl;
She was so dear and fair,
And he told her in every way he could
that when she needed him, he’d be there.
She’s Daddy’s Little Girl, Daddy’s Little Girl,
His pride and joy and love,
She’s Daddy’s Little Girl, Daddy’s Little Girl,
Sent to his arms from God above.
She stands before the altar now,
He watches from nearby,
She pledges vows, declares her love,
He feels a loss inside,
For he still loves his grown-up girl,
She still is dear and fair,
And he tells her in every way he can
That when she needs him, he’ll be there.
